Spotting the Letter X

X is one of the three hardest letters in the game, alongside Q and Z. X-ing Sign, the game's own example, is actually the smartest strategy — very few other roadside words start with X at all.

Most players end up solving X entirely through abbreviated signage rather than a whole word, which is worth knowing going in so you don't waste time searching for something that doesn't really exist on most roads.

Common Things to Spot

  • Deer Xing sign
  • Ped Xing sign
  • Railroad Xing sign
  • School Xing sign

Rarer Finds Worth Watching For

  • A license plate with a visible X
  • Cattle Xing sign (rural routes)
  • "X" marked on a construction detour sign

Spotting Tip

Stop looking for objects that start with X and start looking for the abbreviation instead — 'Xing' signs for deer, pedestrians, and railroads are common on smaller roads and are almost always how this letter gets solved.

Fun Fact

'Xing' has long been used as informal shorthand for 'crossing' on road signage — railroad crossing signs carried similar abbreviations as far back as the early 1900s — making it one of the older abbreviations still in everyday use on U.S. roads, long before texting made abbreviations common everywhere else.

For Younger Players

This is one of the harder letters for young kids since it depends on reading "Xing" on a sign. Let them help watch for deer or pedestrian crossing signs, and explain that "Xing" is a shortcut for "crossing."
